Collecting the Data-day2024
Everything we do online is tracked with every click, tap, and swipe being added to a trail of digital footprints. As we move further to an increasingly digital society, the amount of our personal data being collected will only increase with it. ‘Collecting the DATA-day’ explores the relationship between the individual and their personal data, asking them to consider the scale and consequences to which their personal information is exploited.
For the majority, we are oblivious to the journey our data takes when we hand it over to online systems and companies. However, when attempting to improve our understanding of this, we find much of that journey is kept behind closed doors. It seems, the only way one can truly understand their own personal data, is to take matters into their own hands.
The film and publication ‘The Personal Data Logbook’ visualises the data collected from us online, by applying it to when we are disconnected from the grid. The film reflects the bombardment of data collection that occurs subconsciously to individuals within the digital space. Moreover the publication provides a platform for users to freely collect their own data, empowering them to do whatever they want with it, be that archive it, destroy it, publish it or even sell it.
The film ends with the words “this is my data, and now… I own it”. ‘Collecting the DATA-day’ aims to inspire individuals to tighten the relationship between them and their data, in hope their personal data becomes just that. Personal.
